Landmark Settlement for LA Alliance
September 12, 2022 – The Firm has achieved, on behalf of its client LA Alliance for Human Rights, a landmark settlement with the County of Los Angeles, resolving a federal case brought by the firm against the city and the county regarding the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.
With the case now fully resolved, the city and the county will devote a combined $3.5 billion to provide housing, shelter, and services to people experiencing homelessness throughout the city as well as metrics and deadlines for opening projects and encampment reduction. As a result of the case, the city and county have agreed to make approximately 20,000 additional beds available for those without shelter, with a full slate of services (such as case management and mental health and substance use disorder treatment), and the county has agreed to ramp up outreach and services to those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse disorder. Critically, the agreement contemplates that the city and county’s commitments will be enforced over a period of five years by the Honorable David O. Carter.
